Post-apocalyptic MMO Fallen Earth returned last week with a new QotW entry, penned by lead designer Lee Hammock, who talked about scheduled holiday and live events, game maps, skill respecs and more:
The QotW hiatus is officially over! It's good to be back. And now, straight to the good stuff:
We're still primarily in bug fix and polish mode. We're also getting into a lot more tweaking than we've done previously, looking at recharge timers, run speed, etc. to see how things need to be adjusted. Never a fun process, but an important one.
1. Will there be Holiday-dependent events? Like something like a giant marsupial in a tank on Pouches Day (celebrated in 3 of 50 American States, 2 Canadian provinces, and the town of Kredostovik, Indiana)?
There will be holiday events, just not the holidays you expect. They'll be filtered through the lens of the apocalypse, and sometimes may even lead to conflict. Let's just say the Enforcers and the CHOTA take very different things away from the 4th of July. Since the game is set in the United States, we will be hitting some US-specific holidays, but also more international ones.
2. Will there be Icarus-sponsored "live" events, with actors playing roles, etc.?
I always loved that from other MMOs, when a team came in and sponsored events.
We definitely want to. Such events can be very personnel-intensive, so I'm not sure how much we'll actually end up doing currently.3. How will maps exist in the game? Will they be a piece of paper you can get from a mission? Or a sketch on a PDA?
Maps are old highway, topography, etc maps that have been drawn on, wrinkled, stained, and torn over the years. They don't tell you everything, but they tell you enough.
4. Will you have the full map at the start, or will you have to get the maps of different areas or even go there to get them on the map?
Currently you get all maps at the start, though that doesn't meant they tell you where everything is.
5. Will you be able to set your own priority points on maps? (like putting your self-made camp in there, or a point where a caravan will pass through)
Not currently and probably not for release, but it is something we've talked about.
6. Will there be a respec skills system?
I know folks are sick of hearing this answer, but we're still working on it.
7. Will it be necessary to carry different types of ammunition for various tasks?
Not necessarily different tasks, but for different weapons, some of which may suit given situations better than others.
8. Will high-end armors have resistances for all thresholds, or will players also have to carry specific resist sets?
Different types of armor have different specialties. Some are better against specific types of damage, while others provide more protection but penalize your Dexterity and Coordination due to weight. Players will probably stick to one general type of armor at a time, but may change out pieces as needed, such as adding a gas mask.
9. Will there be a quick transport system -- for example, a bus driver that instantly takes you to a location or will you actually have to travel there?
There is a quick transport system, but it only works between major cities.
10. Will you be able to scale walls, trees, objects?
You can scale ladders. Scaling other stuff will have to come later.
